Overview

Sharjah Art Foundation continues its collaboration with KADIST through A Convening of Civic Poets, an exhibition co-curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of Sharjah Art Foundation, and Julia Morandeira Arrizabalaga, Director of KADIST Paris.

A Convening of Civic Poets showcases works from the respective partnering institutions’ Collections, alongside invited contributions examining the public role of the poet. It draws from filmmaker and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini’s definition of the poet as someone endowed with an ethical responsibility; to address historical and present urgencies, whose writings, utterances and gestures advocate for an embodied notion of social justice. The transformative potential of public broadcasting is also explored through online radio stations, mixed tapes and podcasts. In addition, a series of public programmes and film screenings will take place throughout the show’s duration.

Exhibiting artists include Hajer Ben Boubaker, Nidhal Chamekh, Manthia Diawara, Bouchra Khalili, Helina Metaferia, Joe Namy, Radio Alhara & Learning Palestine Group, Victor Santamarina, Marion Scemama and David Wojnarowicz, Jinoos Taghizadeh, Cecilia Vicuña and Hajra Waheed.

The exhibition on view in Paris from 6 October 2023 to 4 February 2024, comes close on the heels of a production partnership between the two organisations for Sharjah Biennial 15 (2023).
