Overview

Gavin Jantjes: To Be Free! A Retrospective 1970–2023 travels to Whitechapel Gallery in London after its successful first presentation in Sharjah. Featuring more than five decades of the artist's diverse practice, from his anti-apartheid print works made in the 1970s to his recent non-figurative paintings, the exhibition traces the artistic journey of the artist as a creative agent of change.

Organised by Whitechapel Gallery and Sharjah Art Foundation, in collaboration with The Africa Institute, Sharjah, the presentation at Whitechapel Gallery is curated by Salah M. Hassan, Director of The Africa Institute, in collaboration with Gilane Tawadros and Cameron Foote, Whitechapel Gallery.
