Biography

Doug Ashford is an artist, teacher and writer. He teaches design, sculpture and theory at The Cooper Union. Ashford’s principle practice from 1982 to 1996 was as a member of Group Material, who collectively sought to transform art’s relationship to the social life. His most recent public project was Who Cares (Creative Time, 2006), a book built from a series of conversations on civic expression, ethics, and beauty. Group Material was compiled in Show and Tell: A Chronicle of Group Material (Four Corners Books, 2010). Ashford’s paintings have recently shown in Abstract Possible, organized by Maria Lind for the Malmö Konsthall, Museo Tamayo and other locations.
