Biography

Hanni Kamaly’s multidisciplinary, research-driven practice examines material culture, historiography, collective memory, colonial power structures and the bounds of subjectivity. The artist engages with questions of memory and commemoration, embodied narratives, attention and agency. Explorations of structural power relations and the abuse of bodies also illuminate far-reaching poetic connections that transcend linguistic and cultural barriers. Kamaly’s work attempts to inject both vulnerability and criticality into today’s highly polarised discussions of race and colonial history.

Solo exhibitions of Kamaly’s work include THIS LAND 4 ALL, Accelerator, Stockholm (2022); THE MIGHT THEY HAVE, Index, Stockholm (2021); PRÈAMBULE, coyote, Stockholm (2021); UNBOUND THE GAG, Ginerva Gambino, Cologne (2019); ITS ALL REAL YEAH COME THROUGH, Skånes Konstförening, Malmö (2017); and Dipping Off Distance, ALMANAC, London (2017).
