Biography

João Menezes is a composer and sound artist whose interests include sound synthesis, algorithmic composition and sonic interaction design.

From 2010 to 2014, Menezes was an active member of the Digitópia Collective at the Casa da Musica Foundation, Porto, Portugal, where the group performed works such as Instantaneous Sound Tracks (2014), Musica e Revolução (2013), Michael Gandolfi’s Pinocchio’s Adventures in Funland (2013), Variations on Pierre Henry (2012), Sonopolis (2011) and Verão na casa (2011). He has also performed with Digitópia at the Serralves Foundation, Porto (2011, 2014) and Manobras no Porto (2012).

Menezes has led workshops and presented work at international festivals and conferences, including the Semibreve Festival, Braga, Portugal (2015); Code Control Festival, Leicester, UK (2013) and Artech International Conference on Digital Arts, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal (2012). He has also composed music for dance, theatre and film, and is currently Instructor of Music Technology in the Music Program at New York University Abu Dhabi.

He received a bachelor’s degree in electronic music and musical production from the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, Insitituto Politécnico, Castelo Branco, Portugal (2010) and a master’s degree in interactive music and sound design (with high distinction) from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal (2012).

Born in 1989 in Cantanhede, Portugal, Menezes now lives and works in Abu Dhabi.
