Biography

Sakiya is a progressive academy, a field for experimental knowledge production and sharing in Ramallah, Palestine. Grafting local agrarian traditions of self-sufficiency onto contemporary arts and ecological practices, Sakiya creates new narratives around our relationship to land, knowledge and the commons. Within the framework of Sakiya's cross-disciplinary residency programme, marginalised cultural actors, such as farmers and small industry initiatives, assume a prominent role alongside artists and scholars, challenging the demographic divide that characterises cultural production and consumption. Through traditional commoning, farming, stewardship and building practices, Sakiya repairs the rift between art and agriculture, preserves collective memory, reimagines futures and engages in decolonial and indigenous practices of sustainability and security. Sakiya believes liberation comes from a connection to and reframing of an ancient relationship to the land.
