Biography

Stefanie Schulte Strathaus is a film and video curator. She is Co-Director of Arsenal: Institute for Film and Video Art and founding director of Forum Expanded, a section of the Berlin International Film Festival which negotiates the boundaries of cinema.

Her curatorial work comprises numerous film programmes, retrospectives and exhibitions. Her main focus lies on the Arsenal's film archive and on new concepts of curating film archives in general. In this context, she has been working closely with archives in Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Sudan.

She has co-curated a number of film-related exhibitions and festivals, including Live Film! Jack Smith! Five Flaming Days in a Rented World (2009); A Paradise Built in Hell, Kunstverein Hamburg (2014); and From behind the screen, a film programme at Cimatheque–Alternative Film Center.

She currently co-curates the project Archive außer sich with the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Film Feld Forschung GmbH, Harun Farocki Institut, SAVVY Contemporary, pong film GmbH and the master’s programme Film Culture: Archiving, Programming, Presentation at the Goethe University Frankfurt, taking place in the framework of The New Alphabet, a project of Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. She is also the founder of Living Archive–Archive Work as a Contemporary Artistic and Curatorial Practice and the Film Feld Forschung (Film Field Research) in the silent green Kulturquartier in Berlin (with Bettina Ellerkamp and Jörg Heitmann).

Schulte Strathaus holds a master’s degree in German literature, philosophy and film studies (1995).

Born in 1969 in Frankfurt, Schulte Strathaus currently lives and works in Berlin.

Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) offers a programme of talks on cinema and artists’ moving image as well as sessions addressing current debates in the film industry.
