Biography

Vera Tamari (b. 1944, Jerusalem) is a visual artist, Islamic art historian, educator and curator. After graduating in Fine Arts from Beirut College for Women (1966), she studied ceramics at the Istituto Statale d’Arte per la Ceramica in Florence (1974). She earned an M. Phil in Islamic Art and Architecture from the University of Oxford (1984) and later served as a professor at Birzeit University for two decades. During her tenure, she founded and directed the Virtual Gallery and the Birzeit University Museum (2005–2010) and also conceptualised and curated the Cities Exhibition series (2009–2016). Actively engaged in promoting Palestinian art and culture, she was a member of the New Visions Collective and has served on various advisory and cultural boards. Specialising in ceramic sculpture and conceptual art, Tamari has exhibited extensively since 1974, showcasing her work in Palestine, the Arab world, Europe, UK, USA and Japan.
