Biography

Women's Action Forum (WAF), a leading women’s organisation, was set up in 1981 to challenge the rigid Islamisation project of General Zia ul-Haq of Pakistan and his military government. As a collective, WAF does not take funds from international or national sources. It is not a registered forum and has no staff or office. Its six chapters function within a policy framework decided by the chapters, and each chapter is free to develop its own strategies. A secular forum, WAF works with several communities, operating on the basis of consensus. Today it has over 250 active members. WAF has made extensive use of songs, music, theatre skits and films to further its messages. The organisation considers all issues to be women’s issues and, therefore, has a wide canvas.
