Biography

Sarah Zaman is a vocalist. A student of South-Asian classical music for more than 50 years, she has been mentored by Ustaad Chote Ghulam Ali Khan, Baba Tufail Narowal and Munir Khatun, among others. She regularly performs different forms of classical music, such as khayal, thumri, dadra, kaafi and ghazal for various organisations, including Pakistan Television Corporation, Radio Pakistan, Women’s Action Forum, All Pakistan Music Conference and Lahore Arts Forum.

Zaman has represented Pakistan at music festivals and conferences in Norway, Canada, India and China. She has written and presented papers in international symposia and her papers have been published in Pakistan and India. A music teacher since 1992, Zaman partnered with Sanjan Nagar Institute of Philosophy & Arts (SIPA) in 1999 to establish the first degree programme in musicology at the National College of Arts in Pakistan—where she devised a course on analytical listening that she continues to teach.
