Biography

Marianne Fahmy’s films explore the relationship between natural phenomena and human habitation as well as the role it plays in the structuring of reality and the invention of the future. Fahmy’s filmmaking approach combines the work of a storyteller and a historian to construct fictive narratives informed by historical events. Drawing from archival footage and research collaborations with scientists and city planners, her visual mythologies take viewers into a fantastical and speculative realm bound to the past through the artist’s research process.

Fahmy’s work has been shown in a number of exhibitions and festivals, including Sharjah Film Platform 4 (2021); Minimum Standards, Palazzo di Città, Cagliari, Italy (2021); School of Waters, Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennale, San Marino, Italy (2020, 2021); 7th Yokohama Triennale, Museum of Yokohama, Japan (2020); Manifesta 13, Marseille, France (2020); Aashra (Ashkal Alwan online platform), Beirut (2020); After the Canal There Was Only ‘Our’ World, Museum City Art Gallery of Ljubljana, Slovenia (2019); 13th Havana Biennale (2019); Dak'Art Biennale (2018); Manifesta 12, Palermo, Italy (2018); and Kino der Kunst, Munich (2017).

Fahmy has participated in a residency at Le Cube, Rabat (2018), supported by AFAC and the Goethe-Institut; and a second residency offered through Pro Helvetia, Swiss Council, which included a production grant (2018). Among her other grants are the Prince Claus Fund Seed Award, Amsterdam (2021); a production grant from Mophradat, Brussels (2017); a travel grant from the Goethe-Institut (2017); and a production grant from the Harun Farocki Institute, Berlin (2017).

She earned a BA in Painting, Alexandria University (2015), and pursued additional studies at the MASS Alexandria study programme (2016).

Fahmy was born in 1992 in Alexandria, where she continues to live and work.
