Biography

Maya Juracan (b. 1987, Guatemala City) is a curator, activist, and educator dedicated to reshaping historical narratives through art. With a background in language, literature, social sciences, contemporary art, and cultural management, Juracan founded "Proyecto 44" in 2011. This collective took art to the streets for social protest, laying the foundation for the ongoing "Bienal En Resistencia," a biennial challenging traditional spaces on Guatemalan streets. Juracan co-curated the "21 Paiz Art Biennial" with Gerardo Mosquera, contributed to the FEMSA Biennial's educational plan in Mexico, and co-created the feminist curators' collective "La Revuelta," exploring feminist curatorship. An allied curator at Casa de la Memoria, Juracan explores counter-structural possibilities of the art world in various published works. She is currently a professor of Contemporary Art History at the Francisco Marroquín University in Guatemala.
