Biography

NAWA Recordings is an independent record label that focuses on releasing new, alternative and experimental music from the Arab world. The label was founded in 2011 by the Iraqi multi-instrumentalist musician and composer Khyam Allami to release his debut album, Resonance/Dissonance. Building on Allami's desire to create a proper musical home for his own work and that of like-minded musicians, NAWA was officially launched in November 2014 with Maurice Louca’s album Benhayyi Al-Baghbaghan (Salute the Parrot). Inspired by artist-led alternative indie labels such as Dischord, Ipecac and Brainfeeder, the vision of NAWA Recordings is to work with artists who have dynamic work ethics and a drive to constantly evolve and push the boundaries of their local idioms and contemporary genres. NAWA Recordings aims to build a consistent and sustainable support network for its artists, allowing them to have autonomy over their artistic processes and minimising concerns about issues of creative integrity, independence and rights.

Established in 2011, the record label is based in London.
