Biography

Praneet Soi investigates the social effects of media on various localities, such as Kumartuli in North Kolkata and Srinagar in Kashmir, through painting, writing, slideshows, drawings, video and experimental educational workshops. He earned a BA and MA in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara (Baroda), India, received a scholarship to study at the University of California, San Diego (1999) and attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (2002). Soi has held residencies and fellowships at the Stiftung Laurenz-Haus, Basel (2014) and Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC and Skowhegan, Maine (2001), where his mentor was the French documentary filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin. Soi’s work has been exhibited internationally at the Experimenter, Kolkata (2015); Witte de With, Rotterdam (2014); 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013); Manifesta 9 (2012); Martin van Zomeren, Amsterdam (2012); Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2011); Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City (2011); ARTSPACE, Sydney (2011); and 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008), among others.
