Biography

David Spriggs's large-scale installation work, Axis of Power (2009), produced by the 9th Sharjah Biennial, embodied several of these themes. Creating a layered perspective by overlapping multiple images, Spriggs destabilises the image forcing viewers to navigate the room in order to understand the work.

His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at UQAM Gallery, University of Quebec, Montreal (2010), the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, Alberta (2008), and Art Mûr, Montreal, Quebec (2007). Group presentations have included the Sharjah Biennial (2009) and Arts Council Montreal (2009). His work is in the permanent collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Quebec. In 1998 he was the recipient of the Calgary Immigrants of Distinction Arts Award.

Spriggs received a BFA in painting and sculpture from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver (2000), and an MFA in sculpture from Concordia University, Montreal (2007). During these studies he was also a resident at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany (2005) and the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England (1999).

Born in Manchester, England in 1978, Spriggs immigrated to Canada in 1992 and currently lives and works in Montreal, Quebec.
