Overview

Ma3azef, an online publishing platform dedicated to the critique and analysis of contemporary and classical Arabic music, present two ‘mooks’ (hybrid magazine book forms) on Arabic music. The first anthology entitled Omissions in the Official Narrative presents a selection of long-form profile pieces that employ literary as well as journalistic techniques that take an intimate and interpersonal exploration of music legends such as Fayrouz and Abu Bakr Salem. In these texts, nuances are unearthed and complexities both in character and circumstance are revealed, resulting in portraits that move beyond a rigid portrayal of Arab music legends as symbols.

In the second anthology The Moment of Tarab, Ma3azef Editor AbdelHadi Bazerbashi delves deep into the magazine’s archive to handpick seven pieces on what is considered by many to be the golden age of Arabic music. These articles seek to dissect, unravel and reconstruct an understanding of the era that produced this music, and delves into questions both technical and metaphysical.

The publication was made possible through Sharjah Art Foundation's FOCAL POINT Publishing Grant 2019 presented to Ma3azef. Organised as an annual open call, the Grant supports experimental and interdisciplinary publishing projects which stand out for their intellectual, graphic and material qualities.
