Overview

Complementing March Meeting 2021 (MM 2021) is a series of commissioned essays written by scholars, academics, researchers and art practitioners who were selected through an open call for abstracts on the history and influence of Sharjah Biennial. Expanding on Okwui Enwezor’s curatorial concept of the Biennial as a platform to engage with history, politics and society, these essays reflect on the relationship between art production and audience engagement. Taken together, these essays reveal the extent to which the biennial model, such as the Sharjah Biennial, has contributed to the realisation of new narratives and experiences of modern and contemporary art.

MM 2021 included presentations by contributing writers Grace Aneiza Ali, Melissa Carlson, Chiara Cartuccia, Samina Iqbal, Sarah Johnson, Sadia Kamran, Wided Khadraoui, Sabrina Moura, Silke Schmickl, Sadia Shirazi and Murtaza Vali.
Printed copies of the essays, produced as booklets, can be pre-ordered by contacting .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). An e-booklet version of the essays can be viewed here.
