Founder of the hip hop and contemporary dance company Compagnie Niya, Rachid Hedli speaks about his Sharjah Biennial 15 work.
Hedli and Compagnie Niya staged ‘Gueules Noires’ (2016), whose title references a French slang term used for soot-covered miners. The dance piece pays tribute to the spirit and sacrifices of the coal miners of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region—such as Hedli’s father who died of lung cancer—narrating their uprooting and strength among work and illness.
