Reena Saini Kallat presented three works for Sharjah Biennial 15: ‘Chorus’ (2017), ‘Chorus I’ (2015–2019) and ‘Chorus II’ (2015–2019) at Bank Street Building.
The sculptures are modelled after pre-radar devices employed during World War II. Replicating the design of these acoustic mirrors while subverting their military surveillance function, the artist replaces the soundscape of war with birdsong.
The national birds of neighbouring nation-states with turbulent histories sing in unison, resisting the appropriation of species that live across contested borders as symbols of singular national affiliation.
